Tom DeLay to Tango on ‘Dancing With The Stars’
Tom DeLay is back Monday night to do the Tango for the second round of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.” The former Texas Republican is dancing against 13 remaining male and female contestants on the live show, which airs at 8 p.m. EDT.
The show’s producers have exchanged DeLay’s unfortunate brown sequined costume from last week for a black suit with green pinstripes paired with a black shirt and green tie to match his partner Cheryl Burke’s green dress.
On his Facebook page today, DeLay wrote: “Tonite is another big nite! I think I am ready. Four days to learn the tango but I at least know the steps. The Tango is aggressive and arrogant and all of you know those are hard for me. Well maybe I can fake it.”
(And yes, this is the same DeLay who as House Majority Leader was nicknamed the “Hammer” for his tough political style, so his reference to faking it is obviously tongue-in-cheek.)
“Dancing with the Stars,” has the ‘Vote early and often’ philosophy. ‘Vote Early’ because viewers can vote for any of the dancers as soon as the first contestant starts on the show. “Vote often” because viewers can vote for as many contestants are on the show.
Also, the show allows voters to vote 14 times per device – i.e. home phone, cell phone, text, the website, work phone – heck, pay phone even, if you’re really determined. The contestants keep the same toll-free number throughout the competition.
Last week, I dialed DeLay’s number (800) 868-3408 and got this message from a man with a British accent “Thank you for voting for Tom and Cheryl” and the call hung up. I then hit “redial”, heard the British man thanking me again and continued calling until the British man told me I had hit the maximum amount of votes.
I then picked up my Blackberry and dialed the same (800) 868-3408, got the thank you message, hit redial again until the max. Next, I used my beloved Google Voice number to vote another whole round of redials. I then went on-line to the website and voted for Tom DeLay and Cheryl Burke. The only reason I didn’t go vote crazy on text-messaging is only AT&T users can text vote (my Blackberry is Verizon).
In the video below, you can see DeLay and Burke in rehearsals before the first week of competition. During the first show, they did the cha-cha to the song “Wild Thing,” and the judges were momentarily speechless by Tom DeLay’s hip shakes, air guitar, knee slide and butt shakes. One judge stood up and yelled “You’re crazier than Sarah Palin!” to much laughter in the audience.
