url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2010/08/25/mediabistro-miller-lands-new-gig-at-human-events/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC';By Betsy Rothstein on Aug 25, 2010 04:33 PM Emily Miller has a new job as as senior editor for the conservative news siteHuman Events. Her primary beat will be political investigations. She will no longer be a TWT contributor. The news is rather timely karma wise. This is the very week that her former boss, ex-Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas), also had some good luck and was cleared by the Justice Department. The investigation led to in-depth stories with splashy scandal-torn headlines about Miller in WSJ and WaPo regarding the Jack Abramoff ordeal. “Its been a long five years being unfairly associated with and blamed in this ongoing investigation,” Miller told FishbowlDC. “All the former staff became collateral damage.” But that’s all over now, she says, a relieved note in her voice. “I’m thrilled to move forward and aggressively go after the real scandals and ethics violations,” she said. “Onward and upward.” Miller’s first day at Human Events is Thursday. A note (of warning) from Human Events Editor Jason Mattera: “We’re excited to bring Emily on board. She’s tenacious, smart, a helluva writer, and understands the importance of interactive journalism. Leftist politicians, in particular, should be nervous. Emily’s going to expose their corruption, hypocrisy, and vapid [...]

Referring to the legislature, Cuomo said, “I think I can be their best friend.” Emily Miller waits for the NYT Sunday magazine story on Lazio. Haberman says Rangel is playing to the district, not Congress. The Epoch Times throws AGNY candidate Sean Coffey a question about protecting Falun Gong members. Employees of a real estate development company raise money for Christine Quinn. Kevin Powell claims a court victory against Rep. Towns. The Assembly may return next week. Silver backs Genting. Donovan says he has the same stance as Obama on same-sex marriage. And Reshma Saujani tells John Harwood, “I’m not pro-Wall Street, I’m not anti-Wall Street. I’m pro-New York.” The background image: Wall Street bull statue. Tweet This Post

url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2010/08/10/national-review-and-about-those-local-new-york-politics/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC';By Andy McCarthy The Ground Zero mosque has apparently split the Democratic gubernatorial ticket. Emily Miller of Human Events reports that Bob Duffy, Andrew Cuomo’s running-mate (for lieutenant governor) has come out against the project that Cuomo strongly supports. Duffy, who is mayor of Rochester, said that “the best resolution” to the emotional controversy is to make a “different decision” than building a mosque on the hallowed grounds of the 9/11 terrorist attack. Rick Lazio’s campaign issued this statement: “Andrew Cuomo’s position is so far out of touch with the people of New York, it appears his running mate Bob Duffy had to pull away from him.” Lazio has also called on Cuomo, who is currently the state’s attorney general, to investigate the opaque “Cordoba Initiative,” the entity behind the project. Cuomo — who seems to have a pretty low threshold for investigating business enterprises – has scoffed at Lazio’s suggestion, claiming there is no “criminal case” to investigate. Of course, the AG’s jurisdiction is not limited to criminalcases, and his office has jurisdiction to oversee non-profit organizations. Tweet This Post

He is going to be so emotional, as am I.” – Secretary of State Hillary Clinton talking Monday about Bill Clinton’s reaction to Chelsea’s upcoming wedding to investment banker Marc Mezvinsky. While the date is set for July 31, the guest list and location have been hush-hush. Most of the intel about the wedding has come from the Hudson Valley News, but some of that reporting already has been discredited. For example, Human Events reporter Emily Miller went through the reported guest list last week and found Oprah and Ted Turner weren’t actually attending and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin was still trying to figure out whether she was invited. In addition, the White House has given a “not that I’m aware of” response on whether President Obama was attending. So this past January, Levine submitted a collection of the paper’s 2009 Edwards coverage—”It took my assistant forever to find the right binders,” he says—for Pulitzer contention. Right up front I’ll say that my contention is that no matter where a story like this comes from, it is no less a story. If the Enquirer, in fact, did not pay sources for the stories in its 2009 reporting as it claims, then it deserved careful consideration for the award. I don’t like the idea of paying sources for information, by the way, but I am still reasoning through that one, too. Is an accurate (emphasis on accurate) story no less a story because sources were paid to help report it? Again, I think paying sources might be a slippery slope, but I am not as high-minded about that as I used to be. But I digress … Tweet This Post

But would it be a worthy winner? It is now more than two and a half years since that September afternoon when Rick Egusquiza picked up the phone. The journalist and former bartender at Venice Beach listened as the voice on the other end gave him information that would eventually lead to the downfall of a popular, charismatic former US senator who was running for President. Now, Mr Egusquiza and the publication he works for, the National Enquirer, is waiting for another phone call – one which will tell them whether they’ve won the most prestigious award in US journalism, the Pulitzer prize. Just the thought of it has left much of the media establishment here gasping for breath. “If you worked hard and paid your dues to get into the ‘white shoe’ media establishment, it’s going to seem like an injustice to see the Enquirer get journalism’s highest honour,” says Jeff Bercovici, the media columnist for DailyFinance.com.
