url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2010/10/13/mtv-denies-that-obama-telecast-is-political/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC'; Viacom networks MTV, BET and CMT are giving an hour of free air time to President Obama less than three weeks before the midterm elections. The so-called “A Conversation with President Obama” will be live and commercial-free on six Viacom networks at 4 p.m. on Thursday. The networks will not give equal time to a Republican before the election, according to a spokeswoman. MTV denies that the Obama hour of TV is political, despite the timing, weeks before the midterm elections. “We’re not giving an hour of free time to the president to freely express his views. We’re hosting a town hall with 250 young people to ask questions of the president,”Viacom spokeswoman Kelly McAndrew said to HUMAN EVENTS. “This is not a campaign appearance. This is a town hall discussion.” The White House conceived of the concept and asked for the commercial-free TV time, according to Viacom. “MTV and BET had ‘asks’ into the White House to do something with the president,” explained McAndrew. She said that the White House “came back to both networks and said, ‘Hey we could do something. Would you consider doing something together?’” “We said, ‘Great! Let’s see if we can get some more networks who would [...]

url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2010/10/08/nbc-flees-from-lefty-msnbc-cable-network/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC';NBC is going to change the name of its popular website MSNBC.com so that the public does not associate it with the liberal cable network MSNBC. The cable network MSNBC unveiled this week “Lean Forward,” a new ad campaign which embraces its lefty agenda. At the same time, the mothership, NBC Universal and partner Microsoft ran the other way, taking the huge MSNBC website with them. “They want to change the name of the website because they don’t want the NBC name even more associated with MSNBC,” says a network insider. “NBC News doesn’t want to be known as the left-leaning, the ‘forward leaning’ outlet.” The corporate brass decision to disassociate its brands was caused by the public’s confusing the uber-liberal cable TV outlet with the straight-news website of the same name, according to internal memos obtained by The New York Times. The president of MSNBC.com, Charlie Tillinghast, wrote in one of the memos that “naming them the same thing is brand insanity.” MSNBC.com gets over 50 million users a month, making it the third biggest news website, after CNN.com and Yahoo. The NBC executives’ decision to change is a risky marketing maneuver and says a lot about how much the [...]

url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2010/09/09/how-david-westin-ruined-abc-news/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC';The slogan of ABC News was once, “More Americans get their news from ABC News than from any other source.” Now, not a single ABC News show leads its time slot. What happened? ABC News President David Westin spent the past 13 years running the network news division into the ground. Photo – New York Daily News Westin announced Tuesday that he was resigning (the PC term for getting fired) at the end of the year. His internal resignation email was a lame effort to leave his legacy on the network. “Over the last nine months, we’ve put in place new anchors on all of our programs. At the same time, we went through a very difficult transformation made necessary by changes in our business and its economics,” the email said. “I am confident ABC News is better positioned for the future than it has been at any time since I came here in March of 1997.” Westin may be confident, but he’s dead wrong. The news division has been decimated since he arrived during the ides of March. I worked at the ABC News in the Washington, D.C., bureau when Westin was hand-picked by parent company Disney President Robert [...]

url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2010/09/08/eliot-spitzer-goes-from-client-no-9-to-cnn/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC';Despite protests from family-values groups and minority journalists, CNN forged ahead and announced the premiere date for a talk show co-hosted by former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer and columnist Kathleen Parker. The creatively named “Parker Spitzer Show” will premiere on October 4 and air Monday through Friday during the 8 p.m. family hour. Cartoon courtesy of Brett Noel Spitzer resigned as governor after being outed as “Client No. 9″ in a prostitution-ring sting. His TV debut is part of an effort to rehabilitate his image in order to run for New York mayor when Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s third term ends in 2013. “I’ve made it very clear that I’m not ruling it out,” Spitzer said of his political ambitions in May to NY1. On Tuesday, CNN announced the new show with Spitzer and Parker, a Washington Post columnist, with a web video (below) of the two mock bantering to muzak audio. Wearing the cliché Republican woman’s outfit of a pink sweater set and Barbara Bush pearls, the “conservative” Parker says: “All right Eliot, I’m tried of talking about tax policy…” “Whoa, whoa, whoa…. I love tax policy!” Spitzer interjects with his trademark sideways smirk. “Let’s talk about Mideast peace [...]

The show is “unwatchable,” says one former ABC staffer. “She has remedial knowledge of politics,” says another ABC alum. “She’s totally pretentious.” The low ratings for the debut show reflect the viewers dislike of Amanpour’s approach to political debate. ABC’s This Week came in third place on Sunday, with 2.21 million viewers; NBC’s Meet the Press won the time slot with 2.81 million and CBS’ Face the Nation was second with 2.38 million. The long-time foreign affairs correspondent for CNN, Amanpour was lured to ABC with a $2 million a year contract to take over for George Stephanopoulos who now hosts Good Morning America. ABC president David Westin was criticized for the bizarre pairing of a foreign affairs correspondent with the show on U.S. politics. One former network TV exec calls Amanpour’s hosting a “new forms of elitism… see how many people you can offend.” Amanpour’s lack of knowledge of U.S. politics was most glaring in her exclusive interview with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. The interview was more “Schoolhouse Rock” than the policy depth accustomed to Sunday shows. Photo – [...]

Photo – ABC Given the show’s large, female audience and timing with elections, Obama’s choice to appear on “The View” appears politically motivated. Obama will discuss “his administration’s accomplishments, jobs, the economy, the Gulf oil spill, and family life inside the White House,” according to an ABC statement. ABC asserts that Obama’s appearance is in context of its “‘Red, White & View’ campaign which is committed to political guests and discussions.” The campaign is billed as “interviews and informational segments that helped promote civic responsibility during the election season.” ABC spokesman Karl Nilsson calls the series “an umbrella campaign for ‘The View’ that has been in effect since 2008.” Nilsson tells Human Events in an email that the ABC election series has included “literally every political candidate that has been on the show since then (vp joe biden, president clinton, vp al gore, to name a few).” Vice President Biden was interviewed at length on the show in May. NPR affiliate KCRW’s Sarah Spitz andTime’s Michael Scherer emailed their personal hostility for conservative views to their cohorts in the liberal cabal called “Journolist.” Scherer is the White House correspondent for Time Magazine. Spitz is the publicity director for public radio station KCRW and producer of radio shows “Left, Right & Center” and “Politics of Culture.” Spitz openly expresses her vile dislike for conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh. “I never knew I had this much hate in me,” she wrote in the emails obtained by The Daily Caller. “But he deserves it.” Her hate language rises to the level of openly wishing for Limbaugh’s death. She wrote that if Limbaugh were having a heart attack, she would “laugh loudly like a maniac and watch his eyes bug out.” When called for comment, NPR spokesperson Anna Christopher vehemently denied Spitz is associated with NPR. “She’s not an NPR employee,” Christopher told HUMAN EVENTS. “We at NPR do not have any affiliation with her.” NPR seems to be splitting hairs. Robert Byrd (D.-W.Va.) died early Monday, the mainstream media hascanonized him for standing up for coal miners and workers rights, despite his long-term racism and membership in the Ku Klux Klan. Photo – WashingtonLife Much like the MSM did when Sen. Ted Kennedy died last summer, the obituaries are full of the senator’s legislative accomplishment and dedication to the working man, making him more saint than man. To remember the 92-year-old “longest serving senator” fairly, takes looking at his life as a whole. • Byrd joined the Ku Klux Klan in the early 1940s and held leadership positions in the group. He later said the KKK was the “albatross” around his neck. • In protest of President Truman’s efforts to integrate the military, Byrd wrote a letterto segregationists Sen.
url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2010/06/27/794/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC';CNN is already under fire for giving disgraced former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer a TV show during family hour; now the network is being targeted by minority journalists for the hire. The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) has joined the protest. NABJ sent an open letter (full text below) to all the cable new networks –CNN, FOX and MSNBC- about the lack of racial diversity on their airwaves. In the letter, the journalist organization specifically attacked CNN for replacing Campbell Brown at 8 p.m. with Eliot Spitzer. “It just seems that cable news can never find diverse candidates who are good enough to meet their standards. We want to know your standards,” NABJ demands in the letter. CNN President Jon Klein has been unabashed about hiring the disgraced Spitzer. In the bizarre statement from the network, Spitzer is described as “a Democrat who resigned as governor in March 2008 after acknowledging visiting a prostitute, is a well respected political mind and a take-no-prisoners prosecutor.” NABJ jumps on this, asking the cable network in the open letter: “Are you telling us that CNN could find no one better than an ex-politician who quit being New York governor after consorting with prostitutes [...]
