Schroder is in Washington, D.C. for the G.I. Film Festival(GIFF) which honors the heroic stories of U.S. armed forces and their successes and sacrifices for freedom around the world. I interviewed Schroder Friday morning live on “America’s Morning News”national radio show about the GIFF and his support for the U.S military, an aberration in Hollywood. “This is the fourth year for the festival,” Schroder said. “It was created by a wonderful young couple [Brandon and Laura Law Millett] who saw there was no festival specially designed for military armed forces stories.” (When asked what first name he prefers, Rick or Ricky, Schroder good-naturedly explained that he tried to change to Rick when he turned 18, but it didn’t stick, so the 40-year old still goes by “Ricky” professionally.) On Friday evening, Schroder will be given the 2010 G.I. Spirit Award as part of GIFF’s special event “Honoring Hollywood Patriots.” The Spirit Award is presented to one person every year in honor of all or all they do for the armed forces, of our country. She was then shipped to a pet store where she sat alone until she was purchased by a young couple. The stress of those homeless, lonely days made her very sick. Poor ChiliBeyoncé was close to death when the couple brought her to the ER at SouthPaws Veterinary hospital. As luck would have it, Dr. Dondi Dahlgaard was on duty that night in the ER. The couple could not afford to treat ChiliBeyoncé, so Dr. Dahlgaard stepped in and took over her care. Now six years later, ChiliBeyoncé (known to her friends as “ChiliB”) is healthy and living with her Mommy in a loving home. ChiliB knows she is blessed to live in the lap of luxury, but it pains her to know so many of her fellow dogs are homeless and alone. So, ChiliB and her Mommy are raising money for the Washington Humane Society to help rescue and find homes for her canine compadres. In her first year participating in the Fashion for Paws runway show on April 10, ChiliBeyoncé has already broken all fundraising records – $20,715 – so far! She’s going for the title ”Model Washingtonian of the Year”; [...]

In “Saved by Her Enemy,” Mr. Teague tells a compelling and unforgettable true story of getting to know his Iraqi translator, Rafraf Barrak, and realizing that her life was literally in his hands. Miss Barrak, a 23-year-old Muslim from a poor family, worked as a translator for the NBC bureau in Baghdad. Her income supported her parents and nine siblings during the war. Mr. Teague, now a CBS News correspondent, is a natural storyteller. His career as a TV reporter shows in his ability to write succinct and accessible language and to make the visual of the scene draw the reader into the heart-racing moments with him. This book – his first – is [...]

url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2010/01/19/wyclef-jean-defends-yele-haiti-foundations-finances/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC';Haitian-American singer Wyclef Jean held a press conference in New York on Monday to defend against accusations that he has profited from his charity Yele Haiti. Since the massive earthquake that struck Haiti last Tuesday, Jean has called on the public to text ”YELE” to 501501 to donate $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund, which has raised over $2 million in just days, according to the Associated Press. “Yele’s books are open and transparent. We have been given a clean bill of health by an external auditor every year since we started,” Jean told reporters. He denied all accusations that he personally benefited from Yele Haiti, and pointed out that he gave $1 million of his own money to the charity. He referred all further questions on finances to the Hugh Locke, the president of the foundation, saying, “My people are dying and I have to go back to the ground in a few days for a mission relief.” This was the second time in three days Jean has defended the charity. He posted a video on YouTube on Saturday saying he had just returned from Haiti to face an “attack on my integrity and my foundation Yele Haiti.” In a rambling explanation, he said Yele [...]

But if we were looking for material to mock the stars, whose glittery lives are largely untouched by the nightmare, we were disappointed. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised and impressed that the NBC production team and the celebrities showed respect and restraint, and, when appropriate, an appeal for fans to send money to well-run charitable organizations for relief efforts in Haiti. These awards shows have become an odd showcase for celebrities to attempt to show they are knowledgeable about current events, which mostly they are not. But the celebrities at the Golden Globes made speeches about their TV and movie shows and did not attempt to make political statements. When the first celebrities hit the red carpet sporting unexplained red-ribbon pins on their haute couture gowns and tuxedos, I anticipated crocodile tears and pseudo-drama about the earthquake victims. Instead, the pins went largely unmentioned by those wearing them. When Morgan Freeman was asked directly what the red pins meant, he said they were to “honor” the people of Haiti — not the best answer. NBC should have provided [...]

The telethon – which will air 8-10 p.m. Eastern time Jan. 22 on all MTV channels, ABC, NBC, HBO and CNN – will include celebrity appeals from both U.S. coasts. At a party Wednesday night, singerSting and his wife Trude Styler agreed to be on the program, at Clooney’s request. Many Hollywood celebrities, including Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, have announced large financial donations to relief causes for Haiti. In press releases, tweets, Facebook updates and Web site posts, celebrities are publicizing their support and appealing to the public to follow their lead by donating to nonprofits. Pitt and Jolie are giving $1 million to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières because “it is incredibly horrible to see a catastrophe of this size hit a people who have been suffering from extreme poverty, violence and unrest for so many decades,” they said in a statement . The sighting of the striking blonde by another client at the salon was confirmed by a Politics Daily call to the salon receptionist, who said, “Yes, she is at the salon, but I hope you aren’t sending anyone over here.” Mrs. Salahi has been known to frequent the Roche Salon for years, though she apparently uses different hair dressers. The name of the Mrs. Salahi’s stylist on Friday could not be confirmed. The last time Mrs. Salahi was spotted at the salon was the day after the state dinner, when she told the owner about the White House dinner. “She was like, ‘It was really great.’ She said they didn’t get home until 5,” owner Dennis Roche told The Washington Post. Michaele Salahi and her husband Tareq Salahi are known for their Hollywood looks and their controversial claim they were invited to President Obama‘s first state dinner for the prime minister of India, which the White House denies. The Salahis have insisted that they were invited. The week before the state dinner, Mrs. Salahi was also at Roche Salon to tape scenes [...]

Blagojevich was removed from office a year ago after being indicted and impeached. “I’m a big admirer of Donald Trump’s,” Blagojevich said in an interview on “Access Hollywood.” “Here’s someone who has known great success. He is scheduled to stand trial on June 3 on charges he tried to auction off President Barack Obama‘s U.S. Senate seat to the highest bidder. Blagojevich is also accused of campaign fund abuses and corruption. He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
