The show is “unwatchable,” says one former ABC staffer. “She has remedial knowledge of politics,” says another ABC alum. “She’s totally pretentious.” The low ratings for the debut show reflect the viewers dislike of Amanpour’s approach to political debate. ABC’s This Week came in third place on Sunday, with 2.21 million viewers; NBC’s Meet the Press won the time slot with 2.81 million and CBS’ Face the Nation was second with 2.38 million. The long-time foreign affairs correspondent for CNN, Amanpour was lured to ABC with a $2 million a year contract to take over for George Stephanopoulos who now hosts Good Morning America. ABC president David Westin was criticized for the bizarre pairing of a foreign affairs correspondent with the show on U.S. politics. One former network TV exec calls Amanpour’s hosting a “new forms of elitism… see how many people you can offend.” Amanpour’s lack of knowledge of U.S. politics was most glaring in her exclusive interview with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. The interview was more “Schoolhouse Rock” than the policy depth accustomed to Sunday shows. Photo – [...]

Photo – ABC Given the show’s large, female audience and timing with elections, Obama’s choice to appear on “The View” appears politically motivated. Obama will discuss “his administration’s accomplishments, jobs, the economy, the Gulf oil spill, and family life inside the White House,” according to an ABC statement. ABC asserts that Obama’s appearance is in context of its “‘Red, White & View’ campaign which is committed to political guests and discussions.” The campaign is billed as “interviews and informational segments that helped promote civic responsibility during the election season.” ABC spokesman Karl Nilsson calls the series “an umbrella campaign for ‘The View’ that has been in effect since 2008.” Nilsson tells Human Events in an email that the ABC election series has included “literally every political candidate that has been on the show since then (vp joe biden, president clinton, vp al gore, to name a few).” Vice President Biden was interviewed at length on the show in May. In reaction to these public allegations of a widespread, 20-year long hostile work environment by its executives, ABC News has launched a two-front defense: keep any other media outlets from reporting the story and refuse to launch an internal investigation. Meanwhile executives at The Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC, are monitoring The Observer website constantly. “ABC’s own soap opera ‘General Hospital’ has nothing on this daily unfolding drama of ABC on this website. They click on it hourly to see the latest shocker,” a close source tells me. The anonymous but public whistle blowing by ABC staff started last week in reaction to a puff piece in The New York Observer about ABC News Vice President Mimi Gurbst’s retiring to become a high school guidance counselor. The story enraged ABC staff past and present for, in their opinion, misrepresenting Gurbst as “cherished.” They commented on the story with riveting details about her reign of terror while [...]

url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2009/09/28/tom-delay-to-tango-on-dancing-with-the-stars/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC';Tom DeLay is back Monday night to do the Tango for the second round of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.” The former Texas Republican is dancing against 13 remaining male and female contestants on the live show, which airs at 8 p.m. EDT. The show’s producers have exchanged DeLay’s unfortunate brown sequined costume from last week for a black suit with green pinstripes paired with a black shirt and green tie to match his partner Cheryl Burke’s green dress. On his Facebook page today, DeLay wrote: “Tonite is another big nite! I think I am ready. Four days to learn the tango but I at least know the steps. The Tango is aggressive and arrogant and all of you know those are hard for me. Well maybe I can fake it.” (And yes, this is the same DeLay who as House Majority Leader was nicknamed the “Hammer” for his tough political style, so his reference to faking it is obviously tongue-in-cheek.) “Dancing with the Stars,” has the ‘Vote early and often’ philosophy. ‘Vote Early’ because viewers can vote for any of the dancers as soon as the first contestant starts on the show. “Vote often” because viewers can vote for [...]

Their two dance routines are funny and perfectly choreographed by Burke. DeLay found out on Friday that the producers have slotted him to perform last of all the eight male contestants on Monday’s show, which airs at 8 p.m. Eastern (7 p.m. Central). He said he doesn’t know how the lineup was determined, but thinks it will add to his nerves to have to wait through all the other performances. For his dance, DeLay will perform the cha-cha to a fun song that was a hit in the ’60s. To avoid spoiling the show on Monday, I’m not disclosing the song, but DeLay described the choreography — which Burke created — as the story of his college years. (If you are imagining air guitar and moves that might necessitate knee pads, you [...]

He says he’s determined to dance on Monday and in all possible future rounds, despite what he’s calling a “pre-stress” fracture in his foot: “I’ll dance until the bone breaks,” he declares. As for the routine, he insists he’s not at all nervous after all the rehearsals; on Thursday, his professional partner, Cheryl Burke, told him their routine is ready for prime time. DeLay, the Republican former majority leader of the House, is the first politician to be on the popular ABC dance show. He has been in Los Angeles for a couple weeks leading up to the show’s debut. When DeLay was the House whip, I worked for him as his press secretary and then his communications director. I flew to Los Angeles late Thursday from Washington, D.C., to cover the story for Politics Daily, and right after getting my rental car, called DeLay to hear how the he was feeling. On Tuesday, DeLay had been examined by Dr. Robert Bray, who explained that the pain he [...]

url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2009/08/31/yahoo-news-the-hammer-does-the-hustle/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC';Who knew former Representative Tom DeLay, aka “The Hammer,” had such a sense of humor? Such debonair dancing skills? Such grace under legal pressure? Jaws hit the floor earlier this month when ABC announced that Tom DeLay, the ex-GOP majority leader of the House of Representatives, would be a contestant on the next “Dancing with the Stars.” To say that it’s a surprise next move for someone who left Congress in 2006 under a legal cloud would be a mild understatement. In 2005, DeLay was indicted on conspiracy charges related to a campaign-finance probe; the case is still pending. Conrad Green, the show’s executive producer, told the L.A. Times that “we wanted someone sort of iconic and who the audience would have strong feelings about.” ABC has now released photos of DeLay and partner Cheryl Burke“practicing,” (or, Cheryl dancing while DeLay stands with his arms held out.) But according to friends and family, DeLay indeed has the dancing chops to be on the show. Politics Daily’s Emily Miller, who worked for the former representative, confirms “first-hand that DeLay, 62, can cut a rug.” Miller interviewed DeLay’s wife, Christine, who said that her husband can two-step, polka, waltz, country swing and … disco. (You read right: The Hammer can DISCO.) DeLay [...]
