url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2010/10/13/mtv-denies-that-obama-telecast-is-political/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC'; Viacom networks MTV, BET and CMT are giving an hour of free air time to President Obama less than three weeks before the midterm elections. The so-called “A Conversation with President Obama” will be live and commercial-free on six Viacom networks at 4 p.m. on Thursday. The networks will not give equal time to a Republican before the election, according to a spokeswoman. MTV denies that the Obama hour of TV is political, despite the timing, weeks before the midterm elections. “We’re not giving an hour of free time to the president to freely express his views. We’re hosting a town hall with 250 young people to ask questions of the president,”Viacom spokeswoman Kelly McAndrew said to HUMAN EVENTS. “This is not a campaign appearance. This is a town hall discussion.” The White House conceived of the concept and asked for the commercial-free TV time, according to Viacom. “MTV and BET had ‘asks’ into the White House to do something with the president,” explained McAndrew. She said that the White House “came back to both networks and said, ‘Hey we could do something. Would you consider doing something together?’” “We said, ‘Great! Let’s see if we can get some more networks who would [...]

url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2010/04/02/steele-trapped-by-bondage-gate/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC';The Republican National Committee is on the defensive following the discovery that the party reimbursed a staffer’s expenditures at a bondage-themed nightclub. The Democrats had a field day with the conservative values party funding a wild night, but more damaging is the report of personal profit at the highest levels of the RNC. With only seven months to the day until the midterm elections, the Republicans need quickly change course and clean house. When the nightclub story broke in the Daily Caller, the RNC seemed more concerned with proving that Chairman Michael Steele was not at the club, than with the bigger problem of donors saying, “What the heck are those people in Washington doing with my money?” RNC Communications Director Doug Heye tells me that “Chairman Steele has taken the reins firmly to ensure concrete changes are put in place so these unfortunate things don’t happen again.” When the party leaders realized the bigger problem on their hands, Steele and RNC Co-Chairman Jan Larimer sent a defensive memo to donors promising that the party is “dedicated to the efficient use of RNC funds.” It’s a nice sentiment if it weren’t for the fact that one of these self-proclaimed defenders of [...]

url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2010/01/21/gov-mark-sanford-chatting-up-congressmen-on-house-floor/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC';Republican South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford was on the floor of the House of Representatives Thursday talking to GOP congressmen. As a former member of Congress, Sanford is allowed to visit the chamber at will. Among others, Sanford chatted with Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) and Rep. Bill Young (R-Fla.). Sanford has not been seen publicly in Washington, D.C., since the news broke last summer that he lied about his whereabouts to his staff while taking a secret trip to Argentina to meet his lover, Maria Belen Chapur. Sanford’s estranged wife, Jenny Sanford, has written a book about her marriage which is being released in February. Spotted by CNN on his way into the House chamber, Sanford said: ”I was going to catch up with some friends on the House floor.” Sanford, who gave his final State of the State speech Wednesday in South Carolina, did not say publicly why he is in Washington, D.C. Levine told me that Edwards’ admission Thursday that he fathered a daughter with a campaign videographer during his 2008 presidential run made him decide to submit nomination forms for his reporters in two categories: for distinguished investigative reporting by a team, presented in a series of articles, and for a distinguished example of reporting on national affairs. Two weeks ago, I called for the National Enquirer to get the prestigious journalism award because its reporters broke the story that has led to a grand jury investigation of Edwards’ use of campaign funds and the political downfall of a two-time Democratic presidential candidate. At the time, Levine told me that, “Our Enquirer reporters do deserve to be nominated for a Pulitzer, but you know the mainstream media would rather see the Earth explode first!” Now that the Enquirer’s two-year reporting that Edwards had an out-of-wedlock child withRielle Hunter has been validated by him, the paper published this reaction: “John Edwards finally admitted his paternity of his love child to the world today in his 2nd “confession” in a complete vindication of the Enquirer’s exhaustive [...]

url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2009/09/28/tom-delay-to-tango-on-dancing-with-the-stars/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC';Tom DeLay is back Monday night to do the Tango for the second round of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.” The former Texas Republican is dancing against 13 remaining male and female contestants on the live show, which airs at 8 p.m. EDT. The show’s producers have exchanged DeLay’s unfortunate brown sequined costume from last week for a black suit with green pinstripes paired with a black shirt and green tie to match his partner Cheryl Burke’s green dress. On his Facebook page today, DeLay wrote: “Tonite is another big nite! I think I am ready. Four days to learn the tango but I at least know the steps. The Tango is aggressive and arrogant and all of you know those are hard for me. Well maybe I can fake it.” (And yes, this is the same DeLay who as House Majority Leader was nicknamed the “Hammer” for his tough political style, so his reference to faking it is obviously tongue-in-cheek.) “Dancing with the Stars,” has the ‘Vote early and often’ philosophy. ‘Vote Early’ because viewers can vote for any of the dancers as soon as the first contestant starts on the show. “Vote often” because viewers can vote for [...]

Their two dance routines are funny and perfectly choreographed by Burke. DeLay found out on Friday that the producers have slotted him to perform last of all the eight male contestants on Monday’s show, which airs at 8 p.m. Eastern (7 p.m. Central). He said he doesn’t know how the lineup was determined, but thinks it will add to his nerves to have to wait through all the other performances. For his dance, DeLay will perform the cha-cha to a fun song that was a hit in the ’60s. To avoid spoiling the show on Monday, I’m not disclosing the song, but DeLay described the choreography — which Burke created — as the story of his college years. (If you are imagining air guitar and moves that might necessitate knee pads, you [...]

url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2009/08/31/yahoo-news-the-hammer-does-the-hustle/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC';Who knew former Representative Tom DeLay, aka “The Hammer,” had such a sense of humor? Such debonair dancing skills? Such grace under legal pressure? Jaws hit the floor earlier this month when ABC announced that Tom DeLay, the ex-GOP majority leader of the House of Representatives, would be a contestant on the next “Dancing with the Stars.” To say that it’s a surprise next move for someone who left Congress in 2006 under a legal cloud would be a mild understatement. In 2005, DeLay was indicted on conspiracy charges related to a campaign-finance probe; the case is still pending. Conrad Green, the show’s executive producer, told the L.A. Times that “we wanted someone sort of iconic and who the audience would have strong feelings about.” ABC has now released photos of DeLay and partner Cheryl Burke“practicing,” (or, Cheryl dancing while DeLay stands with his arms held out.) But according to friends and family, DeLay indeed has the dancing chops to be on the show. Politics Daily’s Emily Miller, who worked for the former representative, confirms “first-hand that DeLay, 62, can cut a rug.” Miller interviewed DeLay’s wife, Christine, who said that her husband can two-step, polka, waltz, country swing and … disco. (You read right: The Hammer can DISCO.) DeLay [...]
